The verdictColombia shrugged off a brief scare to win 3-1, but Uzbekistan walked away with a goal that goes straight into the history books.

The Performance Review

Colombia opened their World Cup at the Azteca and got exactly the kind of test that flatters a good team. Daniel Muñoz nodded them ahead in the 40th minute, Uzbekistan stunned them when Abbosbek Fayzullaev tapped in their first ever World Cup goal on the hour, and then Colombia simply remembered they were Colombia. Luis Díaz restored the lead five minutes later, helped along by a goalkeeping error, and Jáminton Campaz added the third to settle it 3-1.

For about five minutes at 1-1 it was a genuine contest, and credit to Uzbekistan for dragging it there. But the gap in quality showed the second Colombia put their foot down. Díaz pulling the strings, Campaz finishing the job, top of Group K after matchday one. Scare survived, no panic, message sent.

Who Got Burned

Uzbekistan's goalkeeper, whose mishandling of a weak Luis Díaz shot turned a tense 1-1 into the beginning of the end. And Uzbekistan as a whole, who tasted the lead for all of five minutes before Colombia's class reminded them exactly where they were.

The Bright Side

Abbosbek Fayzullaev's strike is Uzbekistan's first ever World Cup goal, a genuine piece of history on their tournament debut, and for a full hour they more than held their own. That is a foundation to build on, not a night to forget.
