The Performance Review
This was an instant classic in Toronto. Ivan Perisic put Croatia ahead in the 53rd minute, Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the penalty spot in the 68th, and deep into stoppage time Goncalo Ramos rose to head a Rafael Leao cross past Dominik Livakovic to win it in the 94th. Portugal march into the Round of 16 to face Spain, and the whole thing was decided on the finest of margins.
The roast is that Portugal did not exactly dominate. They rode a very generous penalty, survived long spells of Croatian pressure, and needed VAR to chalk off a late Croatia equalizer for a marginal offside before Ramos delivered the knockout blow. It was ugly, chaotic and thrilling, and champions have a habit of winning exactly these nights. Ronaldo's run up to the spot was borderline theatrical, his finish was ice.
Frame it properly and it was Ronaldo against Modric, two forty something icons in what is almost certainly their last World Cup, trading legacy blows. Modric's tournament ends in stoppage time heartbreak, Ronaldo's rolls on to a mouthwatering last 16 date with Spain. Cruel for one legend, a stay of execution for the other.
The VAR Tax
This was the VAR's match as much as anyone's. It handed Portugal the penalty that let Ronaldo level, then wiped out Gvardiol's stoppage time equalizer for a marginal offside. Two decisive interventions, one bewildered Croatia, and a result that will be argued about for years.
Who Got Burned
Croatia and Luka Modric. They matched Portugal blow for blow, thought they had snatched a stoppage time equalizer through Josko Gvardiol, and then watched VAR rule it out for offside before Ramos guillotined them in the 94th. Modric's final World Cup ends not with a whimper but with a gut punch, which is a brutal way for a career like that to bow out.
The Bright Side
Croatia can leave with their heads high. They went toe to toe with Portugal, were a whisker and a VAR line away from extra time, and made the eventual winners sweat for every inch. For the neutral this was the match of the tournament so far, and Modric's farewell, however cruel the ending, was worthy of the man.
