The verdictโ€œMexico waited out a thunderstorm, then needed just half an hour to end Ecuador, and the Azteca barely had to raise its voice.โ€

The Performance Review

After a thunderstorm pushed kickoff back and soaked the drama out of the buildup, Mexico came out and settled things with ruthless speed. Julian Quinones latched onto a ball over the top, cut inside and finished in the twenty second minute, and nine minutes later Raul Jimenez pounced on an Ecuador turnover to make it two. Half an hour played, two goals scored, tie effectively over.

The rest was game management at its most comfortable. Ecuador huffed and searched for a way back in front of a raucous home crowd, but Mexico did the one thing they have done all tournament: they did not concede. This was a fourth straight clean sheet, the co-hosts extending a defensive run that is turning heads, with even teenager Gilberto Mora getting a landmark start on the biggest stage.

Mexico march into the Round of 16 to face the winner of England against DR Congo, and they arrive looking organized, clinical and very hard to break down. There was no drama, no scare, no late wobble, just a home side flexing at the Azteca. The only knock is that it was almost too easy, which is a lovely problem for a co-host to have.

The VAR Tax

The weather did more to delay this match than any referee decision. Once it started, Mexico settled it cleanly with no monitor drama required.

Who Got Burned

Ecuador, undone inside half an hour by two clinical Mexico finishes and never allowed a sniff of a comeback against the meanest defense left in the tournament. Running into a side that has not conceded in four matches, at a rocking Azteca, is nobody's idea of a kind knockout draw.

The Bright Side

Ecuador reached the knockouts and ran into a genuinely excellent, in-form host nation, which is no disgrace. For Mexico and their fans, a fourth clean sheet, a teenager making history and a Round of 16 place at home is about as good as a World Cup night gets.
