The verdictโ€œGhana left it to literally the last kick, and Panama got robbed of a historic point in second half stoppage time.โ€

The Performance Review

For about 95 minutes this looked like the goalless draw nobody would remember. Then, in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time, Caleb Yirenkyi tapped in a Brandon Thomas-Asante cross and broke a hundred Panamanian hearts. Ghana 1-0, a winner so late the cleaners had probably already started stacking the chairs.

It was not pretty and it was not comfortable, but a win is a win and Ghana will not apologise for the timing. Panama, on their day, were organised, stubborn and minutes away from their first ever World Cup point, which makes the manner of this loss especially cruel. One lapse in stoppage time and a whole night of discipline turned into nothing.

Who Got Burned

Panama, who defended for their lives, got within a whisker of a historic first World Cup point, and then watched it evaporate in the 95th minute. That is the kind of goal that follows a team all the way home on the plane.

The Bright Side

Panama proved they can frustrate a side like Ghana for ninety plus minutes, and that organisation will trouble plenty of opponents in this group. For Ghana, finding a winner that late says something real about nerve, even if it says nothing at all about style.
