The verdict“Seventy six percent of the ball, one penalty, and ninety minutes that felt like trying to open a very tight jar.”
The Performance Review
France had the ball for what felt like the entire afternoon and did almost nothing with it. Paraguay parked a five-man defense in the Philadelphia heat and dared Les Bleus to be clever, and for seventy minutes France mostly settled for being patient, which is a generous word for stuck.
The breakthrough, inevitably, came from the spot. Desire Doue drew the foul off Diego Gomez, VAR pointed to the penalty, and Kylian Mbappe sent the keeper the wrong way to spare everyone extra time. It was his nineteenth World Cup goal and drew him level with Lionel Messi on seven for the tournament, a headline the match itself never came close to earning.
Credit where it is due, Paraguay's game plan nearly worked, and a wall that holds France to zero from open play deserves a nod. But as ninety minutes of entertainment this was a slow puncture, rescued only by the single moment the referee reached for his pocket.
The VAR Tax
The only true jolt of drama arrived via a VAR review for the penalty, which tells you everything about how the other eighty nine minutes went.
Who Got Burned
France's attacking imagination, which controlled three quarters of the ball and produced exactly one penalty's worth of end product. When you enjoy that much possession and still need a spot kick to break down a tiring defense, the football was the loser long before Paraguay were.
The Bright Side
Mbappe's ice-cold penalty under real pressure keeps his golden boot race with Messi alive, and Paraguay's disciplined, brave defending was a genuine tactical achievement even in defeat.
