Spain and Portugal spent ninety minutes cancelling each other out in the way only two teams who know each other far too well can. Tight, tactical, low on clear chances and high on tension, it was the kind of derby that makes you appreciate defending even as you quietly beg for a goal.
Luis de la Fuente won it from the bench. Ferran Torres and Mikel Merino came on as substitutes, and in the ninety first minute Torres slipped the ball into the box for Merino to finish at the near post. One moment of quality from two fresh pairs of legs decided a game that looked destined for extra time.
The subplot gave it weight beyond the scoreline. This looked like Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup appearance, and he leaves the stage beaten by a late sucker punch. As a spectacle it was more slow burn than fireworks, but the ending justified the wait.
Who Got Burned
Portugal, who matched Spain for eighty nine minutes and lost to a single substitute's touch. And the billing itself: a tournament sold this as a duel between Lamine Yamal and Ronaldo, and in the end neither superstar decided it, a squad player did.
The Bright Side
De la Fuente's substitutions were a masterstroke, Merino's near-post finish was ice cold, and if this really was Ronaldo's World Cup farewell, at least it came in a genuine heavyweight contest rather than a dead rubber.
