The verdictโSpain did exactly what Spain does: control everything, score twice, concede nothing, and make a competent Austria look like they wandered into the wrong stadium.โ
The Performance Review
Spain strolled into the Round of 16 with a clean, clinical 2-0 over Austria. On the stroke of the 36th minute Marc Cucurella cut it back for Mikel Oyarzabal to slide home the opener, and in the 66th Pedro Porro rose to head in an Alex Baena delivery to double the lead. Comfortable, controlled, and never really in doubt.
The roast is that it was almost too easy to be exciting. Spain smothered the game, Austria barely tested Unai Simon, and the only real drama was Lamine Yamal rattling the post when it could have been three or four. This was control football at its most efficient, the footballing equivalent of watching someone parallel park perfectly on the first try. Impressive, not thrilling.
Zoom out and it is faintly terrifying for everyone else. Spain topped Group H unbeaten, did not concede a single goal in the group stage, and have now kept another clean sheet in the knockouts. Austria go home having run straight into arguably the tournament favourite. There is no shame in losing to a side operating on a different plane.
The VAR Tax
This one barely troubled the video booth. A clean, well-officiated 2-0 with no contentious flashpoint, which after some of this tournament's marathon reviews counts as its own small miracle.
Who Got Burned
Austria, organised but toothless, who never once threatened Spain's clean sheet and were picked apart by a Cucurella cutback and a Porro header. They exit the World Cup with the small consolation of having lost only to a team that looks like it is playing a different sport.
The Bright Side
For Spain this is ominous in the best possible way: unbeaten, still no goals conceded, and through to the Round of 16 with Yamal, Oyarzabal and Baena all clicking into gear. Austria can hold their heads high too, reaching the knockout rounds and bowing out only to one of the favourites.
