The verdictโEngland led a World Cup semi-final with five minutes left, went to a back five, managed seven passes in the opposition half, and lost to the two most inevitable assists in football.โ
The Performance Review
Anthony Gordon scored on fifty five and for thirty minutes England were going to a World Cup final. Then Thomas Tuchel took his goalscorer off on seventy two, went back three and then back five, and England spent the rest of the evening as a defensive art installation. Enzo Fernandez dipped one in from outside the box on eighty five. Lautaro Martinez headed in at the back post on ninety plus two. Both were assisted by Lionel Messi, because of course they were.
The numbers on the collapse are genuinely hard to look at. After Gordon's goal England averaged twelve percent possession. After the seventy second minute substitutions they completed seven passes in the opposition half and had one touch in the final third before conceding. Zero touches in Argentina's box after the switch to a back five. Argentina had ninety three percent of the ball across the final twenty one minutes. That is not a team defending a lead. That is a team hiding under the stairs hoping the noise stops.
Meanwhile Lionel Scaloni made five changes between the sixty fourth and eighty first minutes, all of them forward-thinking, and every goal and assist in the comeback ran through them. Lautaro came on with nine minutes left, having nearly been suspended for a second yellow in the quarter-final, and won the semi. He had said he dreamed it. He is allowed the victory lap on that one. Two managers, two philosophies, one of them ended up in a final.
The VAR Tax
Light touch, for once. Messi's position was checked on the eighty fifth minute equalizer and he was correctly onside, so the goal stood and the internet had to find something else to shout about. On seventy seven a flag went up against Nico Gonzalez after he headed wide, and replays hinted he may have been onside, but with the ball nowhere near the goal nobody lost anything. The real officiating story was Ismail Elfath letting a genuinely chippy match breathe: sixteen fouls in the first thirty seven minutes before the first card, then a Rodrigo De Paul yellow on ninety plus four for a row with Bellingham that was time-wasting dressed as passion. Argentina managed that final passage of play like people who have done it before.
Who Got Burned
Thomas Tuchel, who will be answering for those seventy second minute substitutions until the heat death of the universe, and who confirmed afterwards he is staying through Euro 2028, so England fans have three years to workshop the material. His own explanation was that there were too many gaps and the team got too passive, which is an accurate description of a problem he created. Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Harry Kane were all named as failing to turn up, which is a lot of money to have quiet on the same night. And England as a footballing project got burned again: third semi-final defeat, eliminated in three of their four semi-finals. The tournament changes, the ending does not.
The Bright Side
Djed Spence was outstanding and looks like a genuine long-term answer at left back. Jordan Pickford made a set of excellent saves and was blameless for both goals, including a one-handed stop from a Nico Gonzalez header on sixty nine. Gordon's goal was a properly taken finish from a Morgan Rogers ball. And in pure neutral terms this was a magnificent football match: sixty eight thousand in Atlanta, nineteen fouls in the first half, Mac Allister hitting the post on seventy six, and an ending that fifteen point one million Americans watched, a US World Cup viewership record. England lost. Football won.
