The verdict“Austria won a World Cup match for the first time in 36 years, and debutants Jordan made them sweat for every single minute of it.”
The Performance Review
Austria beat World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1 in Santa Clara to claim their first World Cup win in 36 years, their last one coming against the United States back in 1990. Romano Schmid got it started with a gorgeous long-range strike midway through the first half.
Jordan absolutely refused to play the role of grateful tourists. Ali Olwan scored Jordan's first ever goal at a World Cup, and the debutants matched Ralf Rangnick's side blow for blow, finishing with the same 11 shots and the same 4 on target as Austria.
In the end it took a Yazan Al Arab own goal and a cold Marko Arnautović penalty deep in stoppage time to settle it, a 3-1 scoreline that flatters Austria and undersells just how close Jordan came to a famous result on debut.
The VAR Tax
Arnautović's stoppage-time penalty sealed it from the spot, a clinical, slightly cruel full stop on a game Jordan had made genuinely competitive right to the end.
Who Got Burned
Jordan, but only on the scoreboard, never on the performance. The debutants matched a seasoned European side shot for shot and were a single Yazan Al Arab own goal away from a famous draw before Arnautović's late penalty buried them.
The Bright Side
Jordan walked off as the genuine story of the day. Ali Olwan's strike was the nation's first ever World Cup goal, and a debutant trading punches with a Ralf Rangnick side shot for shot is a debut to be very proud of.
