Austria beat World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1 in Santa Clara to claim their first World Cup win in 36 years, their last one coming against the United States back in 1990. Romano Schmid got it started with a gorgeous long-range strike midway through the first half.
Jordan absolutely refused to play the role of grateful tourists. Ali Olwan scored Jordan's first ever goal at a World Cup, and the debutants matched Ralf Rangnick's side blow for blow, finishing with the same 11 shots and the same 4 on target as Austria.
In the end it took a Yazan Al Arab own goal and a cold Marko Arnautović penalty deep in stoppage time to settle it, a 3-1 scoreline that flatters Austria and undersells just how close Jordan came to a famous result on debut.
