The verdict“Two nil down at seventy five minutes, then Messi decided the holders were not going home.”
The Performance Review
Egypt were seventy five minutes from the greatest result in their history. Yasser Ibrahim headed them in front, Mostafa Zico doubled it on the counter, and but for a VAR flag they would have had a third. The holders were being outplayed, out-fought and, briefly, embarrassed.
Then the game remembered who was wearing number ten. Lionel Messi, who had earlier had a penalty saved by Mostafa Shobeir, teed up Cristian Romero to pull one back, then equalized himself with eight minutes left to score in a record sixth straight World Cup knockout match. Enzo Fernandez headed the winner in the second minute of stoppage time to complete the turnaround.
This was the first time in World Cup history that a team won a knockout inside ninety minutes after trailing by two in the seventy fifth. As drama goes it does not get much richer: a saved penalty, a disallowed goal, a superstar refusing to lose, and a stoppage-time header. Nobody left early.
The VAR Tax
VAR chalked off Egypt's would-be third for an earlier foul, a correct call that also happened to keep Argentina's comeback alive, which Egypt will replay in their nightmares.
Who Got Burned
Egypt, who played the game of their lives for seventy five minutes and still found a way to lose it, undone by the one player on the pitch capable of that comeback. To lead the holders by two and go home with nothing is the cruelest kind of heartbreak.
The Bright Side
Egypt were magnificent for most of the night and Shobeir's penalty save off Messi was heroic, while Argentina showed a champion's refusal to accept defeat. Messi rewriting the record books yet again is a privilege to witness, whichever side you support.
