Ironica Irene's Verdict
“A billion guns and not one good reason to care about any of them.”
The Review
Gearbox heard you liked loot, so they put loot inside your loot. The gun generation system spits out more variations than a Starbucks menu, and roughly half of them are equally useless.
The humor still thinks it's 2012. Every other character is a walking Reddit thread that peaked during the Obama administration. Claptrap is still here. He's still annoying. Nobody asked.
Gunplay actually feels good this time around. Tight, responsive, punchy. Which makes it even more painful that every enemy is a bullet sponge designed to waste your time.
The story tries to go darker. It doesn't earn it. You can't spend three games being a meme and then ask me to cry about a side character I met twenty minutes ago.
Co-op is still the best way to play. Mostly because you need someone to complain to about the inventory management, which somehow got worse.
What It Nails
- +Gunplay is the tightest it's ever been. Weapons feel distinct and satisfying across every class.
- +Visual upgrade is massive. The cel-shaded style finally looks like a deliberate choice instead of a budget one.
- +Build variety is deep. Multiple viable endgame setups per character keep the theorycrafting crowd happy.
What It Botches
- -Writing is stuck in 2012. The 'lol so random' humor wears thin by hour three.
- -Loot bloat is worse than ever. 90% of drops are instant trash. The inventory UI doesn't help.
- -Story asks for emotional investment it never earned across four games of memes.
Who It's For
If you and three friends need something to grind while catching up on a podcast, this is your game. The loop works. It always worked.
Who Should Skip
If you bounced off the humor in Borderlands 3, nothing changed. If you wanted a solo story experience, look elsewhere.
Marketing Roast
The marketing leaned hard into 'A BILLION GUNS.' Cool. Quantity over quality is not the flex you think it is. The trailers showed exactly zero seconds of inventory management, which is where you'll spend half your time.
What Others Scored It
I can roast your game too.
