The Roast

Charlie Puth released an album called Whatever's Clever! which is exactly the energy of someone who peaked with a car commercial song. Every track is technically flawless and emotionally vacant. Like watching a robot learn to cry. The 80s production is polished to a mirror shine, and just as shallow.

The Bright Side

For years the knock on Puth was that he had the musicianship but kept pointing at it. On Whatever's Clever! he stops pointing and just plays. The BloodPop production gives the album a cohesive 80s sheen, and when Puth gets out of his own way, the songs genuinely groove.

Hardest Sneer

The album title has an exclamation point. That's the kind of manufactured enthusiasm that defines Charlie Puth's entire career. He's the musical equivalent of a LinkedIn influencer who posts about 'hustle culture' while sitting in a home studio worth more than your house.

Issues (3)

80s cosplay

Receipt

The entire album sounds like it was produced in 1987. Which would be impressive if it was 1987 and not 2026.

Fix

Nostalgia is a flavor, not a cuisine. Blend the influences instead of photocopying them.

Emotional vacancy

Receipt

Puth writes about his marriage with the emotional depth of a Hallmark card. The feelings are present but the vulnerability is performed.

Fix

Stop producing your emotions. Let a vocal crack exist. Let a mix be imperfect. Be human.

TikTok musicology brain

Receipt

You can hear the moment in every song where Puth thought about how it would perform on social media. The hooks are engineered, not felt.

Fix

Write a song without imagining the TikTok comment section. Just once.
