can we do it all again?

Sonny Fodera ยท House / Dance

โ€œEighteen tracks, a small army of guests, and the most memorable voice on the album is still the question mark in the title.โ€

Cynical Sally roasts the music

Sonny Fodera, your sixth album is called can we do it all again? and across eighteen tracks the answer the record keeps giving itself is yes, exactly the same, eighteen times. This is house music as a buffet, every track wheeling out a different guest vocalist, CHRYSTAL here, Jazzy there, MK, Clementine Douglas, HAYLA, until the credits read like a festival lineup and the songs start to blur into one very long, very pleasant set. And it is pleasant. That is the trap. You are a genuinely reliable producer of feel good house, the drops land, the vocals are bright, the whole thing glides by. But reliable is not the same as memorable, and somewhere around the twelfth featured singer you realise you can no longer remember which hook belonged to which song. An eighteen track album that reportedly took five years to make should leave a mark a little deeper than a nice afternoon. The craft is not the issue. The curation is. There is a tight, lethal ten track record buried inside this thing, and you left it buried under eight more just like it.

The bright side

For exactly what it is, a sun soaked, dancefloor ready house record, it absolutely delivers, and a handful of these collaborations genuinely sparkle. Drop the best eight on a Friday night and nobody in the room is complaining.

The issues (3)
01

Quantity drowning quality

โ€œThe album packs in eighteen tracks, the vast majority built around a different featured vocalist, from CHRYSTAL to Jazzy to MK to HAYLA.โ€

The fix ย Cut it to ten. A tight ten track house record people actually replay beats an eighteen track playlist people shuffle once and forget.

02

Five years for more of the same

โ€œThe record was described as roughly five years in the making, yet it lands squarely in the same feel good house lane as the work before it.โ€

The fix ย If a project takes five years, that patience should buy some evolution, not just a longer tracklist in the established style.

03

Guest list used as a crutch

โ€œNearly every track leans on an outside vocalist to carry the hook rather than on a signature of your own.โ€

The fix ย Build a few tracks that are unmistakably yours with no feature at all, so the album has a center of gravity that is actually you.
