Isaac Brock has spent three decades selling chaos as a philosophy, and on An Eraser and a Maze he finally gets to practice it without a major label chaperone. Free of Epic for the first time since 1999, back on his own Glacial Pace imprint, he responds the way a raccoon responds to an unlocked kitchen. Fifteen tracks, banjos colliding with drum machines, a song literally titled Song About Nothing, and at least four ideas per minute fighting for the same microphone. The title is honest, I will give him that. This record is all maze and very little eraser. Dogbed in Heaven/Give It a Skeleton is two song titles wearing a trench coat, and Speak N' Spell (Or Not) hedges its own joke before the chorus even arrives. Brock calls this creative restlessness, and sure, restlessness once made The Moon and Antarctica. But restlessness is a gift when it finds a destination and an excuse when it refuses to pick one, and this album spends an hour doing both, often inside the same verse. The first record since Jeremiah Green's passing deserved focus as a tribute. Instead it grieves the way Brock does everything, loudly, sideways, and with the structural integrity of a sandcastle at high tide. Enjoyable, frequently. Finished, debatable.
When Brock stops sprinting and lets a song breathe, this album genuinely earns its weirdness. Look How Far and Knocked Down by Waves carry real ache, the kind of crooked tenderness only Modest Mouse can make sound accidental, and the grief for Jeremiah Green seeps through the cracks in a way no polished tribute could fake. After two decades of major label sanding, hearing this band sound untamed, alive, and slightly dangerous again is worth the mess. The maze is frustrating, but at least it was built by hand.
