Cynical Sally roasts the music

So you built a whole album about the hours after the rave, the foggy comedown, the synth haze, the body still humming. And honestly? I'm in. Eusexua was the buildup, Afterglow is the afterthought made flesh, and there are stretches here where the atmosphere is so thick and so deliberate you could lose yourself in it for a week. You took a real swing at a feeling most artists wouldn't even try to name, and that daring is the whole reason you're worth talking about. The problem is that a vibe is not always a song, and on the slower, syrupier tracks you keep mistaking one for the other. Critics weren't wrong to clock the 'experimental afterthoughts' looseness: it sometimes sounds like you and your collaborators tried a bunch of random stuff and pressed record on the moments that felt nice in the room. Nice in the room and finished are not the same thing, my dear. And here's the one that stings, because it's about the best thing you have. Your voice. On too many tracks it gets so enmeshed with the bleary, reverb-soaked production that it stops being an instrument and starts being a texture. You buried the most powerful weapon in your arsenal under your own fog machine. Eusexua earned a Grammy nod for a reason; this sequel is dreamy and gorgeous and just a little too in love with its own afterglow to throw the punches you're clearly still capable of.

The bright side

You are a genuine artist taking real swings, and when the atmosphere on Afterglow locks in, the dreamy dance haze and those ethereal vocals create a mood almost nobody else working today could conjure.

The issues (3)
01

Vibe mistaken for song

โ€œThe slower, syrupier tracks lean on atmosphere instead of structure, and critics flagged it as sounding like 'experimental afterthoughts' where the artist and collaborators were 'trying a bunch of random stuff.'โ€

The fix ย Keep the haze, but anchor each track to one clear idea: a hook, a turn, a destination. Atmosphere should frame a song, not replace it.

02

Vocals drowned in production

โ€œOn the bleary, reverb-soaked, synth-heavy tracks her voice gets so enmeshed with the nocturnal production that it lacks the raw power of her earlier work.โ€

The fix ย Pull the lead vocal forward in the mix on at least the emotional peaks. Let the fog support the voice instead of swallowing it.

03

Living in the predecessor's shadow

โ€œAs a direct sequel to the Grammy-nominated Eusexua, reception was mixed, with a recurring view that Afterglow simply is not as strong as its predecessor.โ€

The fix ย A sequel needs its own thesis. Define what Afterglow says that Eusexua could not, then cut anything that only exists to echo the original.
