the color of rain

aja monet · Spoken Word / Jazz

The tragedy is not that the color of rain will be underheard, it is that the people who most need to hear it have been trained by ten years of Spotify to skip anything that takes longer than a chorus to make its point.

Cynical Sally roasts the music

Aja Monet writes like she has been carrying every line in her body for a decade before letting it out, and the color of rain mostly proves she belongs in the lineage of Sonia Sanchez and Jayne Cortez rather than the playlist economy that will never know what to do with her. The upright bass walks slow, the saxophone breathes around her syllables instead of competing for them, and her voice does that thing where a whisper lands harder than most rappers shouting. The problem is not the artistry, it is the format collision: a record this committed to pacing and silence is being released into a world where the average listener bails at 27 seconds, and you can hear the album quietly daring you to stay. A few tracks lean too hard on the same cadence she perfected on when the poems do what they do, and the production occasionally smooths the edges that should stay jagged. But when she lands a line about colonized grief or the weather of being a Black woman in America, the room she builds is real, and the band knows exactly when to disappear. This is an album that will be cited in syllabi long after the algorithm forgets it ever existed.

The bright side

Aja Monet is one of the few poets working today whose recorded voice carries the full weight of her live presence, and the band she has assembled treats her cadence like a fourth instrument rather than backing music. The color of rain is patient, literate, and built to outlast the cycle that ignores it.
