Mr Know It All

Teddy Swims · Soul/Pop

The Roast

Teddy Swims has a voice that could sell anything, which is the problem, because on Mr Know It All he is selling the soul-pop equivalent of a midweight drama with a decent trailer. The vocal performance is immaculate. The song itself is an idea that has been used in five prior Teddy Swims singles with minor variations. At this rate he will be the most technically skilled vocalist in modern pop with zero memorable songs by the end of the decade.

The Bright Side

The live recording energy on the bridge is genuinely thrilling. Teddy's band is clearly pushing him in ways his studio material does not allow, and the album version of this song hints at what a live record from this guy could sound like. Also, his low register in the second verse is the best vocal work of his career.

Hardest Sneer

The lyric is 'Mr Know It All, you didn't know me at all' repeated with slight rephrasing for three minutes. Teddy Swims has been given the gift of a generational voice and is using it to sing the same breakup metaphor every seven months. Someone at his label has to hand him a real song to sing.
