Cynical Sally roasts the music

Yettinchi oʻziga xos albom, oʻn uch trek, qirq ikki daqiqa, Nashville-dagi oʻz studiyangizda yozilgan, oʻz qollaringiz bilan oyilgan qoplamaga ega. Bir muddatda odam disklar yaratishni toʻxtatib xudosi qurishni boshlaydi. Variety sharhisini shu kuzatuv bilan boshladi, siz jardikoraganizsiz, juda jardikoraganizsiz, nimadir haqida, va ular hech qachon aniqini bilmay qoldirgan. Bu Frozen Charlotte-ning aniq tavsifidir: gʻazab mutlaq, maqsad noaniq, gitara toni ajoyib. Tanqidchilar sizga universal maqtasizlik va Metacritic sakson ikki bergan, va men bu notogʻri deb taʻzim qilmayapman. Ushbu albom ishlasa, bu haqiqatan qiziqarli, va siz hali ham egri chiziq yozasiz, oʻzgartirishni ahlossiz pozitsiya deb oʻylagan odamgadir. Ammo shikoyatlar izchil va adolatli. NME albomga No Name-ning otʻ va turliligini yetishmasligi va bir xil yoʻl bilan impulsni yoʻqolishi ekanligini qayd etdi, xususan Nobody Knows, Thick As Thieves va All Alone Again qoplak ichida yoʻqolib ketgan qoʻshiqlar. David Fricke buni Rolling Stone-da yanada bezattikin ifodaladi: Led Zeppelin II-da siz qoldirgan nisbatan nafas olish uchun koʻproq joy bor edi. Bu haqiqiy muammo. Sifat emas, zichlik. Siz qirq ikki daqiqalik albom hava yoʻq qildingiz, va natija shundaki, oʻn uch yaxshi qoʻshiq bitta uzun qizil yorugʻlik radiatorida eriyadi. The Guardian uni shikastli, shayton bluz-rok debi tasvirladi, bu oʻz javohini sotib oladi, va soʻzlar sotib oladi ogʻir. Siz bu raddiy boʻlishidan bitta dinamik gʻoyani uzoqdarsiz, va gʻoya sukutdir. Ushbu rekordning biroresida bitta qoʻshiq aram boʻlishi kerak edi, va siz unga ruxsat bermadingiz.

The bright side

Siz hali ham format hali ham mavjud deb oʻylagan oxirgi yirik rok musiqachisisiz, va natijalar soʻzlaydi: Britaniya mustaqil chartida birinchi, umumiy oʻttiz top, Avstraliyada yigirma top, va oʻziga xos karyerangizning eng yaxshi sharhlari No Name tashqarida. Bu yerda chiziqni tanlasangiz, siz uni haqiqatan tanlaysiz, va Derecho Demonico-dagi yozuv zungli tahdid koʻchiga ega, bu esa odamlarni avval oʻylantirdi. Shuningdek, siz butun narsani oʻzingiz quydingiz, yuqoridan pastgacha, studiyadan murtchaga, bu qoʻmita yigʻilgan tarkibning davrida hech nima emas. Hech kim Frozen Charlotte-ni eshitadi va uni kim qilganini oʻylamaydi. Bu har yili tobora kammi boʻladigan yutuq.

The issues (4)
01

The album never once lets you breathe

David Fricke, Rolling Stone: "There was more room to catch your breath in the swagger and density of Led Zeppelin II than you get in White's serial rush out of that devilry." NME's Andrew Trendell independently reached the same place, saying the album loses steam with same-y meanderers getting a little lost in the sludge.

The fix  Sequence one genuinely quiet track into the middle third and cut two of the mid-tempo grinders. Dynamics are not a compromise with the audience, they are how you make the loud parts hurt.

02

Three tracks doing the same job

NME names Nobody Knows, Thick As Thieves and All Alone Again as the specific casualties, three songs that occupy near-identical tempo and texture across a thirteen track record.

The fix  Pick the strongest of the three, keep it, and repurpose the best riff from each of the others rather than shipping all three. Thirteen tracks with three duplicates is really ten tracks and a stamina test.

03

Rage without an object

Chris Willman opened Variety's review with "Jack White is pissed. As in, really pissed, about something." On Nobody Knows you sing "Hey, I'm confused and I bet it shows", which is the album diagnosing itself more accurately than any critic managed.

The fix  Name the thing. One verse of specific, checkable detail about what actually angered you would give the other twelve tracks something to be angry at, and turn a mood into an argument.

04

The best writing proves the rest could be sharper

From All Alone Again: "To find a needle in a haystack / Well it's plenty easy / You just burn down the haystack / And then you'll find what you need." A complete idea with a punchline, on a track NME singled out as one of the sludgy ones.

The fix  That image deserved a song built around it rather than a verse buried inside a grinder. When a lyric is that good, restructure the arrangement to serve it instead of burying it in the mix.
