OpenAI Wants to Kill the App Store and Replace It with a Vibe

2026-05-04

OpenAI is reportedly exploring AI first devices that eliminate traditional apps entirely. The pitch is that you do not need apps when the model can do everything. The history of this pitch is long and littered with hardware nobody bought.

Cynical Sally roasts the news

OpenAI is reportedly working on a category of AI first devices designed to eliminate the traditional app paradigm. No app store. No icon grid. Just a model that you talk to and it does the thing. The vision is being championed by Jony Ive, financed by OpenAI's balance sheet, and described by sources as a wearable companion form factor. It is the most ambitious consumer hardware bet anyone has made since the iPhone.

The pitch is genuinely compelling on a slide. Apps are how we got around the fact that computers were dumb. Now they are not. Why click through 47 screens when you can just ask. Why install 200 apps when one model can call any API on Earth. The argument writes itself if you assume the model works perfectly and the user only ever has one need at a time. Neither assumption survives contact with reality.

The graveyard is real. Humane's Ai Pin was a $700 demo of why ambient computing is harder than it looks. Rabbit R1 was a viral launch and a quiet shelving. The post-app device thesis has been attempted by serious people with serious money and good design taste, and it has failed every time so far. OpenAI has more model capability than any of them had. That might be enough. It might not. Either way, the next 18 months get interesting.

What actually happened
  • OpenAI is exploring AI first devices that would eliminate traditional apps
  • Hardware design is reportedly being led by Jony Ive
  • The vision emphasizes a conversational, ambient computing experience
  • Previous attempts at post-app hardware include Humane Ai Pin and Rabbit R1
  • Both prior attempts faced commercial difficulties despite strong initial press
  • OpenAI brings model capability that previous companies did not have access to
Silver lining
  • 01

Even if the first generation of AI first devices flops, the design pressure they put on existing platforms is real. Expect iOS and Android to ship more ambient and agentic features faster than they otherwise would have, just to defend the home screen.

Who got burned
  • 01

Every developer who built an app business around the assumption that the app paradigm is permanent. And every Humane investor who got there first and watched the demo not survive the room.
