The Roast

Tori Amos has been making records since 1992 and her core artistic identity has been remarkably stable across more than three decades. In Times of Dragons does not break that pattern. It deepens it. The album is 12 tracks of piano forward, vocally adventurous, lyrically dense work that does not chase trends and does not need to. Her piano playing remains the secondary lead instrument that no other singer-songwriter has fully matched. The lyrics are mythological in a way that will work for everyone who has always trusted Tori with their mythology and will continue to bounce off everyone who has not. The strongest tracks here belong on a career best of, which is impressive for an artist this far into a discography.

The Bright Side

For an artist in her thirty-fourth year of releases, In Times of Dragons demonstrates a creative consistency that should be celebrated more loudly than it is. Tori Amos remains one of the few artists who has never made a bad album.

Hardest Sneer

The mythological lyrical framework will alienate listeners who cannot follow her there. That has been true since 1992 and Tori has never adjusted for it. That is the entire point of being Tori Amos.
