Trent'anni dopo, i Placebo sono tornati al 1996 per registrare di nuovo il loro debutto e, sinceramente, la faccia tosta e meta del fascino. Lo chiamano un director's cut, un modo molto educato per dire: ora finalmente sappiamo cosa stiamo facendo, quindi vorremmo rifarlo. Dieci tracce originali, due bonus, tutto ricostruito piu forte, piu pesante e piu muscoloso, con Come Home che arriva come se avesse saltato il giorno delle gambe per tre decenni e poi fosse andato dritto alla rastrelliera degli squat. Il punto e che funziona. I brani sono piu propulsivi, l'esecuzione e sicura, e la produzione non suona piu come una band che spera che lo studio traduca il rumore nelle loro teste. Stavolta ci e riuscita. Il che ci porta alla parte imbarazzante, e lo sapevi che c'era. Questa e l'economia della nostalgia in giacca di pelle. Re-incidere il proprio catalogo e il nuovo trucco preferito dell'industria, e la domanda silenziosa sotto tutto questo mestiere e se dovresti ricomprare un album che gia possiedi, perche la band ha finalmente capito l'equalizzatore. Louder Than War ha dato 4,5 su 5, SonicAbuse 9 su 10, e un critico ha detto che sarebbe il miglior disco alt rock del 2026 se fosse un album nuovo di zecca. Grande elogio, ma nota quel se. Il complimento si regge sul fingere che l'originale non sia mai esistito. Eppure, occhiata di traverso a parte, questa e la rara re-incisione che si merita la propria esistenza invece di proteggere solo delle royalty. Non si sono adagiati sull'anniversario, ci hanno davvero sudato sopra, e il risultato e un debutto che finalmente suona come la band lo ha sempre sentito. Se devi rivendermi i miei stessi ricordi, fallo almeno cosi bene.
Questa e la rara re-incisione che migliora davvero l'originale invece di limitarsi a incassare: piu pesante, piu sicura e meritata, con il 4,5 di Louder Than War e il 9 di SonicAbuse a confermarlo. Trent'anni di esperienza dal vivo si sentono in ogni battuta.
The do-over you have to pay for

The fix Be upfront that this is a companion, not a replacement. Bundle the original alongside it so listeners feel they are gaining a perspective rather than being asked to repurchase their own nostalgia.
Riding the re-record trend
“Re-recording the back catalogue is the industry's fashionable move right now, and even glowing reviews frame the praise conditionally: critics say it would be the best alt rock record of 2026 if it were brand new, which only works by setting the 1996 version aside.”
The fix Lean into what only a 30-year-later version can offer, the documented live evolution of the songs, instead of competing with new releases on a technicality.
Louder is not automatically deeper
“The reworking is described as much louder, heavier and more propulsive, with Come Home cited as the prime example. Muscle and volume impressed reviewers, but bigger is a production choice, not proof the songs needed reinventing.”
The fix Pair the heavier full-band takes with a stripped or alternate version of at least one track so the reissue showcases range, not just more wattage.
