You took the game everyone already called perfect and somehow gave the perfectionists a reason to apologize.

The Verdict

Let me be clear, because I do not hand these out: you earned a 93 Metascore and a Must Play badge on PS5 and Xbox, and you did it by remaking a game that was already a genre landmark in 2005. Most studios would have lit a candle, kept the merchant's laugh, and shipped a fresh coat of paint. You rebuilt the whole village, refined the combat to a knife's edge, and then handed Leon a parry that turns panic into poetry. That takes nerve.

The cruelty of your achievement is that you made the impossible look routine. You sat in the same room as the RE2 remake, the high-water mark of Capcom's whole program, and you did not flinch. Refined gunplay, a smarter Ashley who stopped being a babysitting simulator, an expanded story that respects the source instead of cosplaying it. You sold 3 million in two days, 4 million in two weeks, and crossed 8 million inside roughly eighteen months. Numbers like that are usually reserved for games people forgive, not games people adore.

Here is the genuine bright side, and it is the whole game: you proved that reverence and ambition are not enemies. Every system that needed sharpening got sharpened, and every memory worth keeping survived intact. The few cut or altered set-pieces are the only thing the diehards can wave around, and frankly they sound like people complaining the renovated cathedral has slightly fewer gargoyles. You did the thing. You did it cleanly. Now stop making the rest of the industry look lazy.

What it nails

  • Combat refinement that turns the new parry mechanic into the most satisfying defensive move in modern survival horror.
  • Fixed the franchise's oldest joke: the reworked Ashley escort sections are now genuine tension instead of a chore.
  • An expanded story and presentation that honors the 2005 original without being a museum piece.
  • Commercial proof of quality: 3 million in two days, 8 million-plus lifetime inside roughly eighteen months.

What it botches

  • A few beloved set-pieces from the 2005 original were cut or altered, and the faithful noticed every one.
  • Standing shoulder to shoulder with the RE2 remake means it invites a comparison it will never fully escape.
  • Its near-flawlessness sets an expectation bar that Capcom's next remakes now have to clear.
  • So polished it leaves almost nothing for a critic to actually grip onto, which is its own kind of frustrating.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants the definitive version of a classic, where the nostalgia is intact but every rough edge has been ground smooth.

Who should skip

Purists who treat the 2005 original as untouchable scripture and will resent a single moved gargoyle.
