Gothic 1 Remake

Developed by Alkimia Interactive · THQ Nordic

Open-World Action RPG · PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S · 2026-06-05

A remake so faithful to 2001 it kept the atmosphere, the ambition, and every single rough edge that made you ragequit back then.

Cynical Sally reviews the games

You rebuilt one of the great cult RPGs and you respected it so hard you were scared to touch it. The colony still oozes atmosphere, the open world still rewards the patient, and the old school progression still feels earned. For the faithful, this is a pilgrimage. For everyone else, it is a wall.

Because reverence has a cost. The combat is the same unforgiving tango it was a generation ago, the quality of life conveniences modern players assume are missing, and the technical flaws arrived right on schedule. A 71 to 73 on Metacritic with 85 percent positive on Steam is the exact score of a game that thrills its believers and bewilders the newcomers it needed to convert.

The tragedy is that you clearly had the talent to modernize this and chose not to, out of love. But fidelity to a 2001 design is not the same as a good 2026 game. You preserved the museum perfectly and forgot some people came to actually live there, not admire it behind glass.

What it nails
  • 01

Atmosphere and world design that still pull you into the colony from the first hour.

  • 02

A systemic open world that rewards exploration and patience.

  • 03

Old school progression that makes every upgrade feel genuinely earned.

  • 04

Visual upgrades that honor the original art direction without betraying it.

What it botches
  • 01

Combat that is as clumsy and punishing as the 2001 original, by choice.

  • 02

A near total absence of modern quality of life conveniences.

  • 03

Technical flaws and rough edges at launch.

  • 04

A reverence so strict it alienates the new players the remake needed.
