You waited thirteen years to write a sequel, then wrote three games at once and somehow nailed all of them.

The Verdict

You took a thirteen-year-old cult favorite and came back with the kind of confidence that should be illegal. Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2023, from eight nominations including Game of the Year, and you earned every one. This is what happens when a studio stops apologizing for being weird and just leans all the way into the dark. The visuals and atmosphere aren't decoration here, they're the whole argument.

The dual-protagonist structure is the masterstroke. Splitting the game between two leads could have been a gimmick that halved the focus, but you used it to build two intersecting nightmares that make each other scarier. And then the live-action FMV 'Mind Place' sequences, which on paper sound like a relic from a 1998 CD-ROM, end up being the most distinctive thing in the genre that year. You took the corniest tool in the box and made it sing.

Commercially you didn't just survive, you broke your own record: Remedy's fastest-selling game ever, a million copies by the end of 2023, past two million in 2024. The only real scar is the launch strategy. Digital-only, PC-exclusive to the Epic Games Store, no physical release, which became a recurring debate for a reason: you put one of the decade's best horror games behind a velvet rope a lot of buyers resented. The game's an 89. The storefront politics are the asterisk you chose.

What it nails

  • Award-validated direction, art and narrative; three wins from eight nominations at The Game Awards 2023 is not luck.
  • A dual-protagonist structure that doubles the dread instead of splitting the focus.
  • Live-action FMV 'Mind Place' sequences that turn a dated technique into the genre's most distinctive flourish.
  • Record-breaking commercial pace as Remedy's fastest-selling game ever, past two million copies by 2024.

What it botches

  • Digital-only at launch with no physical release, leaving collectors and slow-internet buyers out in the cold.
  • PC-exclusive to the Epic Games Store, a recurring point of debate that gatekept some of its own audience.
  • The ambition demands patience; this is a slow, cerebral horror game that won't grab the action crowd by the collar.
  • Thirteen years of buildup means the bar was absurd, and not every newcomer will have the context the story leans on.
