In March, Netflix announced it was acquiring InterPositive, an AI post production startup co-founded by Ben Affleck, terms undisclosed. In July, a regulatory filing did what press releases never do and put a number on it: five hundred and eighty seven million dollars, all cash. Bloomberg had previously estimated the deal might reach six hundred million, so the guess was good. The entire InterPositive team moved across and Affleck joined Netflix as a senior advisor. None of that was secret. Only the price was, and only until a form was due.
The product itself is defensible and genuinely useful. InterPositive's tools fix missing shots, replace backgrounds and correct lighting, which are real, expensive production failures that have historically meant reshoots. When the deal was announced, Affleck framed it exactly that way, saying the tools address real world production challenges such as missing shots, background replacements or incorrect lighting, and that the goal is to protect the power of human creativity. Read in March, with no price attached, that is a reasonable thing for a working director to say.
Read in July, next to five hundred and eighty seven million dollars in cash and the disclosed fact that around three hundred Netflix titles have already used generative AI, it reads differently. Nobody spends that on a plugin. You spend that when you intend to industrialise something. And the tools substitute most directly for the work of the people furthest from the poster: VFX artists, lighting crews, reshoot units, the below the line workforce whose jobs are precisely the missing shots and incorrect lighting in question. Netflix, notably, attached no executive quote to the disclosure at all.

Netflix filed a real number instead of hiding behind undisclosed terms forever, and cash beats an earn out structure that quietly ties creators to performance targets for years. The technology solves genuine problems: a missing shot or a botched lighting setup has historically meant hauling a crew back to a location at enormous cost, and fixing that in post is not inherently a betrayal of anything. Crucially the whole team was retained rather than acqui hired and dissolved, which is the more common and far uglier ending. If Netflix uses this to stop cancelling half finished shows over reshoot budgets, that is a genuinely good outcome for the work and the people who make it.
