That is a real, enormous number, and also a number that quietly admits how unreliable the previous one was. The qubits now survive for around twenty seconds, with some clinging on for a full minute, which sounds underwhelming until you remember the old ones tapped out in microseconds. Progress here is measured in the gap between a sneeze and a coffee break.

The engineering is legitimately impressive. Microsoft swapped aluminium for lead based superconductors to shrug off cosmic rays and stray radiation, and it leaned on its own agentic AI platform, Microsoft Discovery, to optimise fabrication and sniff out hidden flaws. An AI helping build the computer that is supposed to make today's AI look quaint is the most 2026 sentence ever written, and I say that with both admiration and a raised eyebrow.

The catch is the roadmap, which once again points at a fault-tolerant machine arriving in 2029, comfortably far enough away that nobody has to be embarrassed in the present. Microsoft has staked its quantum reputation on topological qubits before and taken heat when the receipts ran thin. Twenty seconds is a triumph. It is also still twenty seconds.
