A Dutch crime sequel that tackles human trafficking with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, but at least it swings hard enough to leave a mark.

The Review

Loverboy: Vertrouw Niemand picks up where the first film left off, following ex-loverboy Terrance as he tries to rebuild his life after prison. The deal is simple: infiltrate a human trafficking network, rescue four missing girls, get custody of your daughter back. It's the kind of premise that writes itself, which is exactly what it feels like happened. The script follows every beat you expect from a Dutch crime drama, hits every emotional note on schedule, and wraps up with the kind of third act that makes you check your watch not because you're bored, but because you know exactly where it's going.

Credit where it's due: the subject matter is handled with more weight than the first film. The introduction of the 'lovergirl' concept adds genuine dimension to a topic that most crime films reduce to background noise. The performances are committed, the Amsterdam underworld scenes have real grit, and there are moments where the film transcends its genre limitations. When it lets the horror of human trafficking speak for itself without dramatic music telling you how to feel, it's genuinely effective.

But Danny Leysner can't help himself with the melodrama. Every quiet moment gets undercut by a soundtrack swell. Every revelation comes with a reaction shot held two beats too long. The film wants to be a serious social commentary AND a crowd-pleasing crime thriller, and it can't quite be both at the same time. It's a perfectly competent sequel that will pack Dutch cinemas and spark important conversations. It just won't surprise you while doing it.

What It Nails

  • +The lovergirl angle adds genuine depth to the human trafficking narrative
  • +Committed performances across the board, especially in the undercover sequences
  • +Amsterdam underworld scenes have authentic grit and tension
  • +Takes its subject matter seriously enough to be genuinely uncomfortable in the right moments

What It Botches

  • -Predictable plot structure that follows every crime sequel template beat by beat
  • -Melodramatic soundtrack that doesn't trust the audience to feel emotions on their own
  • -Tries to be social commentary and popcorn thriller simultaneously, nailing neither fully
  • -The custody subplot is pure emotional manipulation dressed up as character motivation

Who It's For

Dutch crime drama fans who liked the first Loverboy. Anyone interested in films that tackle human trafficking without flinching.

Who Should Skip

If you need subtitles for Dutch and don't want to read for two hours, or if you found the first film heavy-handed, the sequel doubles down.

Marketing Roast

The trailer gave away every major plot point, which for a Dutch crime film is basically tradition at this point. 'Inspired by true events' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the poster copy.
