Jon Batiste não se dedica a ideias pequenas. Black Mozart, o segundo volume da sua Batiste Piano Series, chega no June 19, calculado de propósito para coincidir com o Juneteenth, pela Decca, e é piano solo que reimagina Mozart por uma lente musical negra americana. É também apenas o primeiro de três álbuns planeados, com mais dois discos inspirados em Monk ainda por vir. O conceito é enorme, o enquadramento é significativo, e a ambição é exatamente a que se esperaria. Quando engata, engata mesmo. Em faixas como Country Zart e Molto in Caya Hueso, a criatividade de Batiste pega fogo, motivos clássicos saltam para o soul e o gospel, num momento Mozart e no seguinte algo que grita como um hino de Aretha Franklin. São esses os momentos em que toda a grande ideia realmente compensa. Mas aqui está o senão, e os críticos também o notaram. O disco está mais plano quando apenas reinterpreta Mozart fielmente, e mais vivo quando Batiste abandona a fonte por completo e toca a si próprio.
