Jon Batiste doet niet aan kleine ideeën. Black Mozart, het tweede deel van zijn Batiste Piano Series, verschijnt op June 19, bewust getimed op Juneteenth, bij Decca, en het is solopiano dat Mozart herdenkt door een zwart-Amerikaanse muzikale lens. Het is bovendien pas de eerste van drie geplande albums, met nog twee door Monk geïnspireerde platen op komst. Het concept is enorm, de framing is betekenisvol en de ambitie is precies wat je zou verwachten. Als het kookt, dan kookt het echt. Op tracks als Country Zart en Molto in Caya Hueso vat Batiste's creativiteit vuur, klassieke motieven springen over in soul en gospel, het ene moment Mozart en het volgende iets dat schreeuwt als een hymne van Aretha Franklin. Dat zijn de momenten waarop het hele grootse idee zich echt uitbetaalt. Maar hier zit de adder, en de critici merkten het ook. De plaat is op zijn vlakst wanneer ze Mozart gewoon trouw herinterpreteert, en op zijn levendigst wanneer Batiste de bron volledig loslaat en zichzelf speelt. Het meest geprezen moment op een Mozart-album is dat waarop hij ophoudt Mozart te spelen. Dat vertelt je precies waar het echte, betere album zich verborgen hield.
Het concept is oprecht ambitieus en de Juneteenth-framing geeft het echt gewicht, en op zijn hoogtepunt overbrugt Batiste eeuwen muziek binnen één maat op een manier die bijna niemand anders zelfs maar zou durven proberen.

The fix Trust your own voice. The Batiste originals are the reason anyone presses play, so give them the whole record instead of treating them as detours.
