Sony bought Bluepoint, gave them a live-service God of War nobody wanted, cancelled it, then closed the studio. Masterclass in mismanagement.

Sally's Take

Bluepoint Games made Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes. Two of the most critically acclaimed remasters in PlayStation history. Sony's response to this excellence was to acquire the studio, hand them a live-service God of War project, watch it fail, and then shut the whole thing down. If you wrote this as a fictional plot about corporate incompetence, an editor would reject it for being too on the nose.

Dark Outlaw Games got the axe too, swept away in what Sony is calling 'broader restructuring.' That's corporate speak for 'we made bad bets on live-service games and now real people are paying for it.' The cancelled God of War project tells you everything about PlayStation's strategic confusion. They saw Fortnite money, wanted Fortnite money, and threw one of their best studios at a genre that had nothing to do with what made them great. Bluepoint was a precision instrument for remaking classics. Sony tried to use a scalpel as a hammer.

This fits a pattern that should worry every PlayStation fan. Sony has been chasing the live-service dragon for years, and the body count is stacking up. Studios closed, projects cancelled, talent scattered. The company that gave us God of War, The Last of Us, and Spider-Man is now making decisions that would get a middle manager fired at any other corporation. Bluepoint deserved better. Their legacy is intact, but their future was stolen by a spreadsheet.

What Actually Happened

  • Sony shut down Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes
  • Dark Outlaw Games was also closed as part of broader PlayStation restructuring
  • Bluepoint had been working on a live-service God of War game that was cancelled before the closure
  • The closures are part of PlayStation's ongoing pivot away from failed live-service investments

Who Got Burned

Bluepoint's entire team, who went from making two of PlayStation's best remakes to being handed a doomed project and then shown the door. Also, fans of quality remasters who just lost the best studio in the business at it.

Silver Lining

Bluepoint's talent is now free to land at studios that actually know what to do with them. And maybe, just maybe, Sony will finally learn that not every studio needs to be making a live-service game.
