올해 최고의 음반을 만들어놓고는 거기에 가사를 얹었다. 이게 전부다. 10개 곡, 39분, 직접 제작, 그리고 정말 음악은 아름답다: 기타 연주는 편하고 따뜻하고, 곡의 배열은 하나의 생각처럼 흐르고, 침실 펑크에서 풀 밴드 스웨거로 넘어가는데 의상을 입어보는 것 같은 느낌이 전혀 안 난다. Stereogum은 이걸 완전히 완성된 작업이고 올해 가장 순수하게 즐길 수 있는 앨범이라고 했다. 맞다. 그런데 같은 리뷰에서는 너의 가사가 시종일관 형편없다고 덧붙여야 했고, 그것도 맞다. Steve, 너의 문제는 이거야. 넌 진정한 프로듀서이자 편곡가로 성장했는데, 너의 작곡은 여전히 새벽 2시 그룹 채팅 수준이다. 한 곡에는 SZA가, 다른 곡에는 Erykah Badu가, 세 번째 곡에는 Cecile Believe가 있다. Erykah Badu. 현대 소울 음악의 위대한 가사 작가 중 한 명을 스튜디오에 불러놓고는 아기가 크고 karma가 쌍년이라는 가사를 건넸다. 이건 도발이 아니다. 이건 운 좋게 운율을 찾은 남자가 그걸 놓칠 수 없어서 집착하는 거다. 답답한 부분은 넌 분명히 할 수 있다는 거야. 'nice shoes'에서 넌 인생은 문신이 아니라 얼룩일 뿐이고, 청춘을 쫓는 건 촌스럽다고 썼고, 갑자기 노래에 인물이 생겼다. 그건 진짜 생각이고, 솔직하게 전달되고, 앨범의 다른 어떤 것보다 더 세게 먹혀 간다. 넌 가사를 못 쓰는 게 아니다. 넌 그냥 손을 안 대는 거야. 너의 작업 과정 어딘가에는 니가 처음 생각한 게 재미있으니까 놔둬야 한다고 판단하는 순간이 있고, 그 순간이 너한테서 고전을 빼앗고 있다.
이건 아주 좋은 앨범이고 난 그걸 명확하게 말하고 싶다. 왜냐하면 가사 문제는 깠기 쉽지만 그 성취를 설명하기는 더 어렵기 때문이다. 프로덕션은 매끄럽고, 기타 톤은 진짜 너 것이고, 10개 곡으로 39분 동안 점점 드물어지는 것을 만들었다: 필러도 없고 낭비도 없는 음반, 그리고 넌 다 느낄 때쯤 끝난다. Rolling Stone이 넼을 Gen Z의 대표 팝 거장이라고 하는 건 과장이 아니다, 그냥 테이프가 나는 거다. Clash는 진정한 고전에 거의 도달한 작업이라고 했다. 이거랑 고전의 차이는 재능도 예산도 야심도 아니다. 대충 45분 정도를 펜 들고 뭔가를 지워내려는 의지다.
The shock line is doing the work of an actual idea
“From doom: "I'm a big baby suckin' on big titties / Karma's a bitch, and I bet she's pretty". Stereogum's Chris DeVille flagged it directly, writing that he had not winced this much listening to an otherwise-excellent album since Kanye was at his peak.”
The fix Every time you reach for a shock image, write the boring version of the line underneath it and compare. If the boring version says more about you, keep the boring version. Shock is a texture, not a thesis.
Filler phrasing inside your most emotional moments
“"I don't wanna cheat no more, be no whore / I would rather be the one that you tell your mom about and stuff". You built to a confession and then closed it with "and stuff", which detonates the sincerity of the entire couplet.”
The fix Ban filler tails from vulnerable lines. If a line needs a cushion at the end, you have not committed to the feeling yet. Sing it plain and let it be uncomfortable.
Elite features, undercooked writing to hand them
“SZA on is it cool?, Erykah Badu on pure colour, Cecile Believe on lovesexdrugbomb. Three of the most distinctive voices available to you, on a record whose near-unanimous critical complaint is the quality of the words.”
The fix Write the feature verses last, after you have found what the album is about. Guests should be arriving into a finished thought, not decorating an unfinished one.
You already know what your best writing sounds like
“From nice shoes: "Life is but a stain, it's not a tattoo / It's lame to chase youth." It is the most quoted lyric on the record and the plainest, with no shock image anywhere near it.”
The fix Take that couplet, pin it above the desk, and use it as the bar. Any line that would embarrass you next to it does not make the album.
