4.0Sally score
The franchise's biggest box-office hit and one of its weakest films, which is the most Scream thing that has ever happened.

The Verdict

You did the one thing fans had begged for: brought back Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard, and handed the directing chair to franchise architect Kevin Williamson himself for his feature directing debut.

The reunion sold tickets, this became the highest-grossing film in the entire Scream series at over $210 million worldwide, so the nostalgia engine absolutely works as a business.

But generally negative reviews tell the harder truth: legacy casting and a new Ghostface stalking Sidney's daughter Tatum is a premise, not a movie, and the writer who defined this series learned that directing it is a different mask entirely.

What it nails

  • Reuniting the original survivors, Campbell, Cox, Arquette, Lillard, is genuine fan-service catnip and the reason the box office hit a series record.
  • Passing the torch to Mckenna Grace as Sidney's daughter Tatum is the correct generational move for a franchise about legacy and bloodlines.
  • Putting Williamson, the man who wrote the rules of this universe, behind the camera is a meaningful, story-driven hire, not a random gun-for-hire.
  • It understands its own commercial appeal: the marketing promise of 'the originals are back' is delivered, and audiences rewarded it.

What it botches

  • Generally negative reviews are not a fluke, the screenplay leans on reunion and reference where a Scream needs sharp meta-commentary and real suspense.
  • Williamson's directing debut shows: writing a great Scream and staging one are different crafts, and the seams show in the execution.
  • Bringing back beloved survivors raises the bar for giving them something to do, and 'they are simply here again' is not enough.
  • A seventh entry has to justify its existence beyond box office, and 'Sidney's daughter is targeted' is comfortable, familiar, and a little too safe for a series built on subversion.

Who it's for

Die-hard Scream loyalists who just want the original cast on screen again, and slasher fans who care more about Ghostface showing up than about reviews.

Who should skip
