Seis anos despues de The New Abnormal, The Strokes regresan con Reality Awaits, su septimo album, producido por Rick Rubin y anunciado con dos sencillos que sugieren que una banda por fin se relaja para volver a ser una banda. Going Shopping es suelta, melodica y veraniega, Falling out of Love tiene ese jangle sin esfuerzo que los imitadores nunca llegaron a descifrar, y Albert Hammond Jr. prometio un disco mas relajado que el anterior. Por las primeras pruebas, dice la verdad. El problema, como siempre con The Strokes, es la diferencia entre relajado y vago. Es una banda que cambio la musica en 2001 y que lleva dos decadas siendo juzgada frente a sus propias once primeras canciones, una maldicion que ninguna cantidad de incienso de Rick Rubin puede levantar. Titulos como Psycho Shit y Going to Babble On sugieren un grupo que se divierte, lo cual es encantador, pero la diversion nunca fue la cuestion. La cuestion es si Julian Casablancas todavia lo desea mas de lo que desea sonar como si no le importara. Lo que ofrecen los sencillos es comodidad, la calida familiaridad de una banda que sabe exactamente lo que es. Lo que aun no ofrecen es la sacudida, la sensacion de que esto tenia que existir. Reality Awaits bien podria ser un muy buen album de The Strokes. Si es uno imprescindible, esa es la distancia que llevan intentando recortar desde mas o menos 2003.
Cuando The Strokes encajan en un groove, casi nadie lo hace mejor, y los dos sencillos demuestran que la quimica sigue intacta y que las melodias siguen siendo naturales. Rick Rubin sabe apartarse del camino de una gran banda, y unos Strokes mas sueltos y mas felices son algo realmente bonito de recuperar.

The fix Lean all the way into the looser, happier identity the singles hint at instead of chasing the ghost of the first record.
Loose can shade into coasting

The fix Keep the looseness but aim at least a couple of songs squarely at the jugular, the way the early singles always did.
